Edmonton on 26 June 1912
07 May 1915
2 years, 10 months
From Edmonton, Canada. Joan boarded on the Lusitania with her mother Gertrude as 2nd class. On May 7, 1915 the huge liner was struck by a torpedo from a German U-boat in the midst of the Mid-Atlantic ocean. Gertrude holding Joan in her arms jumped in the water and found a piece of wreckage for her to float on until the lifeboats came back. Joan was suffering greatly from exposure of the Atlantic and soon died in the lifeboat. Gertrude stated "my baby is dying", kissed her good-bye and threw her into the sea.

Can't imagine seeing a mother having to bury her child like that. If only she had her buried properly among all the recovered bodies :'(
